Focus on the Greenbelt
The Student Photo Contest
Deadline is August 30, 2009

The Greenbelt Conservancy invites New York City school students from all five boroughs to submit up to three color or black & white photographs depicting a scene in the Greenbelt. 

The contest, with more than $2,600 in prizes, is open to all skill levels. Photos will be judged on a wide range of criteria, including creativity, originality and composition.

Contest Rules

1: Entrants must be a New York City public or private middle, high school or college student in any of the city's five boroughs.

2: Your photo must depict a scene within the Greenbelt's 2,800 acres. Consult our Trail Map or call us. Not all Staten Island parks are in the Greenbelt.

3: You may submit up to three color and/or black and white photographic prints, no larger than 8x10 inches. Entries must include the negatives (Do not cut negative strips or tape negatives), floppy disk or CD. Do not submit photo entries via E-mail.

4: Each photograph must be labeled with the place the photo was taken, along with your name, school, home address and telephone number.

5: Photographs must not be mounted or framed.

6: A completed application form must accompany all entries. The deadline for entries is August 30, 2009

Tips for taking winning photographs

Experiment and be creative; take pictures from various angles; try to show a different view of a familiar scene or object.

Include people and/or wildlife in your pictures.

Obtain a Trail Map and explore the many aspects of the Greenbelt.

Experiment with different types of film.

Photograph the Greenbelt during different seasons and weather.

Think like a photojournalist: Allow your photos to tell a story.

Think about what is interesting about other photographs and try to capture that same feeling in your own work.
