Yoga in the Greenbelt

9:30 am: Join certified yoga instructor Nancy Kaufman for Saturday morning yoga sessions overlooking our beautiful and inspiring woodlands at the Greenbelt Nature Center. All fitness levels are welcome. Fee: $130 for ten weeks, get 11th week free; for Greenbelt Conservancy members; $150 for non-members. Per class fee is $13 for members and $15 for non-members. 9:30 am, Join us at the Greenbelt Nature Center for a dynamic exploration of the wonders of the forest. Through hands-on activities, observations, finger plays, games,and stories, children will become familiar with the sights and sounds of the forest and learn about nature from A to Z. The program will take place indoors and outdoors [weather permitting] for 2 and 3 year olds and their caregiver. Fee: $4 Greenbelt Conservancy members; $6 for non-members. Recycling Resolutions

2 pm: Make this year’s New Year’s resolution one you can keep. Join the Greenbelt Educators at the Greenbelt Nature Center and learn how to go greener. Learn key recycling tips and play the recycle relay game. Educational and fun for all ages. Registration required. Call (718)351-3450.

Winter Hearth Stories (for the wee ones)

1 pm: Come gather in the warmth of the fireside at the Greenbelt Nature Center and hear stories about the season of frost. Citizen Science: Great Backyard Bird Count

2 pm: Become a citizen scientist! Learn how to identify common backyard feeder birds and record data in preparation for Cornell Institute of Ornithology’s Great Backyard Bird Count, and practice observing feeder birds on the event room terrace of the Greenbelt Nature Center. Snow Globe Secrets

1 pm: There are wonderlands hidden inside plastic domes. Come to the Breenbelt Nature Center to learn the secrets of snow globe construction, and add your own special effects and hidden treasures as you create your own snow globe. Winter Wonderland Hike

2 pm: See the forest in its winter plumage, as bare trees allow fantastically clear views into the distance. Join us on this invigorating hike of moderate length and discover the wonders of hiking in winter. Meet at High Rock Park parking lot, 200 Nevada Avenue (off Rockland Avenue). Free program. Twice as Nice: Valentine’s Day and Chinese New Year

2 pm: Join us for a fun and informative celebration of two special occasions in one. Make origami hearts, red envelope lanterns, learn about the Year of the Tiger, and enjoy traditional snacks, firecracker balloons, and learn the significance of symbolism in these celebrations. History… for the Horses

10 am-12 pm: Celebrate Presidents Day at the Greenbelt Nature Center with a presentation and activities about horses throughout history, including presidential pets, and meet a horse from the Mounted Division of the Parks Enforcement Patrol. Monday, February 15
Family Hike

1 pm: The Obamas are an active family who love to spend time outdoors together. Celebrate Presidents’ Day with a brisk, roughly 90 minute hike in the heart of the Greenbelt. This free program will be held at the Greenbelt Nature Center. Call (718) 351-3450 to register.

Tuesday, February 16
Extreme Experiments

12 pm-2pm: Science doesn’t only take place in a classroom or a lab. Perform some awesome experiments, including DNA extraction from fruit and other great hands-on activities. This program at the Greenbelt Nature Center is suitable for ages 7 and up. Fee: $8 non-members/$6 Greenbelt Conservancy members. Fee includes all materials. Registration and pre-payment required. Presidents’ Week Tree Tots

9:30 am- 10:15 am: Continue our dynamic exploration of the wonders of the forest and learning about nature from A to Z with a special activities just right for the wee ones. The program at the Greenbelt Nature Center will take place indoors and outdoors [weather-permitting] for 2-4 year olds and their caregiver. $4 Greenbelt Conservancy members; $6 non-members. Polar Animals

11:30 am-1pm: The Polar Regions are home to wondrous creatures, including penguins and polar bears, and more. Come into the nature center for a really cool program, learn more about the lands of ice and snow, and make a frosty fun craft to take home. This program is suitable for ages 5-7. Thursday, February 18
Fur, Feathers, Scales and Tails: Drawing Animals art class

10 am-12 pm: From chipmunks to chickadees, the Greenbelt has many animals scurrying and fluttering about, even in the winter. Join resident artist Kathy Trimarco at the Greenbelt Nature Center and learn techniques for drawing lifelike reptiles, mammals, and birds, and observe winter wildlife from the event room terrace. This program is suitable for ages 8 and up. Fee: $8 non-members/$6 Greenbelt Conservancy members. Fee includes use of drawing materials. Registration and pre-payment required. Call (718)351-3450.

Hike to Nowhere

1 pm: Join the educators at the Greenbelt Nature Center for a magical mystery tour of the Greenbelt. Length of hike will depend on the weather, and if the weather is not suitable for hiking, an indoor activity will take place in lieu of a hike. From feeder birds to squirrel drays to animal tracks, who knows what we’re going to see. Dress appropriately, and bring your sense of adventure.

Terra-ble Lizards

11 am-1 pm: Millions of years, dinosaurs roamed the earth. Go on a fossil expedition in search of remnants of these long lost creatures, make a dinosaur sun catcher, and visit descendants of the dinosaurs, our resident reptiles. This program at the Greenbelt Nature Center is suitable for ages 5 and up. Fee: $8 non-members/$6 Greenbelt Conservancy members. Fee includes all materials. Registration and pre-payment required. Animals in Art: Clay-tacular Greenbelt Animals
 

1 pm: Join resident Artist Kathy Trimarco at the Greenbelt Nature Center and create a cool clay relief tile of your favorite native Greenbelt animal. Fee: $8 non-members/$6 Greenbelt Conservancy members. This program is suitable for ages 8 and up. Fee includes clay and use of carving and decorating tools. Registration and pre-payment required. Frog Lore… and More

1 pm: As spring approaches, hear the tale of the “The Frog Prince” and create a beaded frog to hop along home with you. If weather permits, we will take a quick leap to the vernal pond to see where young tadpoles will soon hatch. This program at the Greenbelt Nature Center is suitable for ages 5 and up [children under 8 will require caregiver assistance for the craft]. Warming Winter Teas 

2 pm: Throughout the ages, many herbal remedies have been made from native plants, which have been boiled into delicious teas.  Make your own herbal teas, and sip and savor your creations. “Expressions of the Forest” acrylic paintings by Mary Fader

Celebrate the arrival of spring by viewing a unique, uplifting collection of nature scenes. This exhibit at the Greenbelt Nature Center is made possible in part by Materials for the Arts, Department of Cultural Affairs, and the NYC Department of Sanitation.

FrogWatch USA: Citizen Science

2 pm: FrogWatch USA is a frog and toad monitoring program that gives YOU the opportunity to help scientists conserve amphibians. Learn to recognize distinct voices among the chorus of frog and toad calls. This program will be held at the High Rock Park Environmental Education Center, 200 Nevada Avenue (off Rockland Ave.). Leprechaun Hike 

1 pm: Join the Greenbelt educators at the Greenbelt Nature Center as we search for elusive leprechauns and their pots of gold on this pre-St. Patrick’s Day hike. Dress appropriately for hiking. Watercolor Birds Adult Art Workshop

Atka Returns to the Greenbelt!

1pm: Join the Greenbelt Nature Center staff as we welcome Atka, and the New York Wolf Conservation staff back for an encore presentation of “Wolfology”. Meet Atka, the arctic gray wolf and learn about the important role wolves play in nature.
